Who this is for. A theme developer completing the first page type, and anyone who will show editors how to use it. After this page there will be a published article on the development site, and you will have seen the editing form you designed.
Add the page
Open Content › Pages and add a page:
- Title: "My first article". It also becomes the page's name in the admin.
- Parent: where the page sits in the page tree. Its URL is the parent's URL followed by its own slug, so a page under
/newswith the slugmy-first-articleis at/news/my-first-article. Always choose one: a page with no parent is the site's home page, and a second is refused with A homepage already exists for this site. - Slug: made from the title if you leave it empty.
- Layout: Article. The list holds only page layouts; when there is only one, it is chosen for you.
Fill in the fields
Your three areas appear as fields, in the order you added them, with the labels and help you wrote. This is the first time you see the form you designed from an editor's side: read the labels and help as an editor would, and fix them in the layout now if they do not make sense. Fill in the heading and the body, and upload an image.
Publish
Turn on Published and save. Published is a date as well as a switch: a date in the future schedules the page, and until then visitors get a 404. New pages start unpublished, unless the site's Pages setting Default published is on and you are allowed to publish.
Check it signed out
Open the page's URL in a private window. You should see the placeholder: the page's name and "Article layout works.", inside the site's usual header and footer. The areas are not shown yet; the template does not read them until the next page.
