Canonical URLs in Sitemaps and Bug Fixes

Sitemaps list each record at its canonical URL, so search engines get one address per piece of content. Cart links keep their campaign tracking parameters.

Key highlights

  • Sitemaps follow canonical URLs: each record is listed once, at the address search engines should index.
  • Campaign tracking survives cart links: UTM and other parameters are kept when a cart link redirects.

Changes in behaviour

  • Canonical URLs: a record with a Canonical URL now appears in the sitemap at that address instead of its own, and a record whose canonical points at another site leaves the sitemap. Check existing Canonical URL values for old or mistaken addresses.

Sitemaps follow canonical URLs

Sitemaps now list each record at the Canonical URL set in its SEO settings, instead of at its own path, so the sitemap agrees with the page's canonical tag and search engines get one address per piece of content.

  • Records that share a canonical are listed once.
  • Records whose canonical points at another site are left out.
  • Language alternates follow the same rule.
  • A canonical can be a full URL or a path; one that cannot be read falls back to the record's own address.

Campaign tracking survives cart links

Restoring an abandoned cart, clearing a cart or applying a discount code from a link now keeps the parameters that came with the link, such as UTM tags, when it redirects to the cart, so those visits are attributed to the right campaign.

Other improvements and bug fixes

  • Hostnames are now matched regardless of upper or lower case, so a link or canonical URL entered with mixed capitalisation is correctly recognised as belonging to the current site.
  • Records left out of the sitemap are now reported by reason, making it easier to tell whether a missing page has no published content or was removed by its canonical URL.
